Can you survive in the wild? In this enrichment experience, you will become familiar with skills that are critical to outdoor survival. You will identify a variety of activities, situations, and emergency circumstances where outdoor survival skills can keep you safe.

You will reflect your learning of each skill in the format of your choice, such as pictures, videos, or a collage. A weekly meeting will provide the opportunity for group participation where you will share findings as well as discuss brief video demonstrations provided by your instructor.

During this course, you will learn career-related skills and earn a badge for this accomplishment. A badge is a digital certification of your career-related learning that you can share on social media and higher education platforms, or with colleges, potential employers, peers, and colleagues. Select this link to learn more about badges.

Major Topics and Concepts

In week 1, you will be introduced to the most important survival skills.  You will get outside to envision and rank how these skills could be critical to survival.

In week 2, we will meet to discuss how you can find warmth and shelter if you were lost or stranded.  You will be going outside to find outdoor materials that could help you to create warmth and shelter.

In week 3, we will meet to discuss finding food and water in the wilderness.  You will be going outside to identify food sources of plants and animal parts that are safe to eat.

In week 4, we will meet to talk about signs and signals that can help others to find our location. You will be going outside to test how far your signal can be seen and heard.

In week 5, we will meet to talk about methods that can help us find our location.  You will be going outdoors to track the sun’s location, determine how much daylight remains, and consider how to use other natural landmarks to find your location.

In week 6, we will meet a guest speaker who will share their survival skill experiences.  We will revisit our week 1 rankings of which skills could be critical to survival to determine if you have changed your mind. We will share accomplishments that you have reached during this enrichment experience.
