Overview

Middle School Health aids students in creating a foundation of personal health. Beginning with properly defining health, this course then builds upon basic health practices to emphasize the importance of balance. Attention is given to each of the six dimensions of wellness; namely, physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental. Students are taught the skills necessary to improve every aspect of health. They are also encouraged to reflect upon their own personal wellness each week.

Project

You are a wellness coach working with local doctors’ offices to expand holistic health services for patients. Patients looking to address and potentially alleviate their ailments using more natural approaches are referred to you. By working with a wellness coach, patients will focus on creating more balance among the multiple areas of life to see improvement in their health and happiness. You will research the importance of goal-setting, how to effectively develop and work toward a goal, and the impact of goal-setting on holistic health outcomes.

You are School Special Education Case Manager. Your specialty is assisting students in developing strategies to lessen their excessive stress and anxiety by developing coping mechanisms, learning time management, and learning effective communication strategies. You will research all of these mental health strategies, then write a script for and create a short two-minute educational video for each strategy to teach your students about these important mental health skills.

You are a Community Planning and Development Specialist with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In this job, you will plan and develop a community of healthy homes for a local low-income housing development. You will analyze the current health and safety issues facing the housing development, and develop a plan to mitigate the current issues and create a safer home environment for its residents.
