SNHU Customized Learning: Rubric Design (EDTS 503VL)

This one credit graduate course is designed for educational professionals. It may be taken on its own or as part of a cluster of courses on the foundations of customized learning.
This course equips educators with the skills to design, implement, and evaluate rubrics tailored for competency-based and customized learning environments. Throughout the course, students will explore foundational concepts of rubrics, including their purpose, types, and benefits in promoting clarity and consistency in student assessment. Participants will engage in hands-on exercises to develop and refine rubrics that support student autonomy and reflect various depths of knowledge. By the course’s conclusion, students will be able to create actionable rubrics that serve as both assessment tools and learning aids, guiding students in understanding expectations, assessing their progress, and achieving learning outcomes in personalized ways.

Note:  There will be 4 required virtual synchronous meetings using Zoom: 5:00 – 6:30 pm EST on Wednesday- Oct. 15th, Oct. 29th, Nov. 12th and Nov. 26th

Competencies

Rubric Fundamentals

Students will demonstrate an understanding of rubric fundamentals by explaining the purpose of rubrics, describing types of rubrics, and explaining the benefits of rubrics in customized learning.

Rubric Design

Students will demonstrate an understanding of rubric design by describing rubric characteristics, explaining depth of knowledge levels, and explaining rubric design.

Rubric Writing Process

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the rubric writing process by describing actionable competency-based rubrics, explaining rubric criteria, and creating a rubric using the rubric writing process steps and conventions.

The Role of Rubrics in Customized Learning

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the role of rubrics in customized learning by analyzing rubrics as a tool for student understanding and explaining the use of rubrics to achieve customized assessment.
