This one-credit course is designed for educational professionals. It may be taken on its own or as part of a cluster of courses on the foundations of customized learning. This course offers an exploration of competency design, a foundational component of customized learning. Students will learn the essential principles of competencies, including how to define, design, and implement them to support customized learning in different educational environments. The course emphasizes the connection between competency-based learning and customized instruction, strategies for overcoming implementation challenges, and the long-term benefits of this approach. Students will also explore real-world applications, life-long learning and analyze the challenges associated with the transition to post-secondary education. By the end of the course, students will apply what they have learned to create a set of comprehensive competencies tailored to specific educational outcomes, equipping them to foster mastery and equity in diverse learning environments.
Note: There will be 4 required virtual synchronous meetings using Zoom: 5:00 – 6:30 pm EST on Tuesday- April 22nd, May 6th, May 20th and June 3rd.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of competency design by describing competencies for different educational levels, describing strategies to create measurable competency statements, and creating a competency statement based on a sample curriculum.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the implementation of competency-based learning by explaining challenges with the implementation of competency-based learning, describing possible solutions to obstacles, and explaining the benefits of connecting competencies to customization.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the long-term benefits and challenges of competency-based learning by explaining the connection to real-world applications, describing life-long learning, and analyzing challenges associated with navigating the transition to post-secondary education.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of competencies by describing competency, explaining the characteristics of effective competencies, and explaining the role of competencies in customized learning.
