Projects allow students to demonstrate competence and understanding of concepts and skills by completing a career-related task. For example, the assignment might be to create a mural, a package design, a speech, a film review, or a movie set – you name it! These creative projects are about applying your learning acquired through in-depth research to real-world career tasks.

Each competency will be addressed through a project based on a real-life career task. Here are the careers you will explore: Librarian, Freelance Writer, Social Media Manager, Magazine Editor, Talent Agent, and Education Manager.

Projects

Critical Analysis of Texts

You are a technical writer who creates materials to make complex ideas more understandable and engaging. Recently, you have been asked to make a topic of your choice more accessible to middle school students. You will choose a fiction and nonfiction text about the same topic. You’ll summarize the plot, events, and theme in the fiction text. Then, you’ll summarize the central idea in the nonfiction text. Finally, you’ll tie the two texts together with a diagram to show students how the ideas are connected.

Informational Writing

You are a career counselor who helps people learn about careers they may like. Each month, your organization puts out a newsletter that spotlights different careers. You are in charge of this month’s feature article, which will highlight the similarities and differences between two careers of your choice. To write your article, you will research careers.  Then, you will develop a plan for organizing your ideas before writing and revising your final article.

Narrative Writing

You are an emergency management specialist for a local community. Your office is trying to teach the public about what to do in the case of a natural disaster. You have been asked to write a children’s story that explains natural disasters to young people. Your goal is to help them understand how to prepare or respond to a natural disaster. Before creating your narrative, you’ll learn more about the elements of a story and create a plan to organize your ideas.

Comparing & Contrasting Texts

You are a web developer. A  new nonprofit client has hired you to design their website. You need to put together a portfolio of brief texts and other media that you would include on their website. Your client wants to review these before you publish them to make sure they convey the right message. You need to make sure the genres of the texts you include appeal to your audience. You also want to make sure you have used the best organizational pattern for your writing so that you can express your nonprofit’s mission well.

Author's Craft

You are a literary agent. You are seeking a publisher for an author client. You were so impressed by their recent work of fiction that you decided to create a multimedia presentation to help sell the text. In your presentation, you will use evidence from the text. You’ll highlight the author’s use of figurative language. You’ll also show the ways that they develop their characters and narrative perspective.

Argumentative Writing Rubric

You are a police officer in your local community. Recently, the town’s council has been debating safety issues involving youth in the community. You’ve been asked to write an argumentative essay either in support of or against a specific safety measure. You will use researched evidence as you create your argumentative essay.
