Middle School Journalism: Tell Your Story
Who? What? When? Where? Journalism provides us with the answers to these questions about the events that affect our lives. In this course, students will learn how to gather information, organize ideas, format stories for different forms of news media, and edit their stories for publication. The course will also examine the historical development of journalism and the role of journalism in society.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of careers in journalism by summarizing types of journalism, describing types of news reported by journalists, and explaining career options in journalism.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of news story analysis by describing factors that affect newsworthiness, explaining the role of objectivity in news stories, and explaining strategies for analyzing news stories.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of gathering journalistic information by describing types of sources, explaining source evaluation strategies, and explaining information gathering strategies used by journalists.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of organizing journalistic information by describing purposes of news stories, explaining strategies for evaluating potential stories, and describing organizational techniques used by journalists.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of article writing by explaining pre-writing considerations, describing strategies for writing articles, and explaining considerations for revising articles.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of newscast preparation by describing types of newscasts, explaining the elements of a newscast, and summarizing newscast creation considerations.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of journalistic editing by summarizing the editing process, explaining an editor’s responsibilities, and describing types of errors seen in the editing process.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of journalistic ethics by explaining the role of the law in journalism and describing elements of a journalistic code of ethics.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of media and society by explaining the impact of the media on society and describing strategies for attracting an audience.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the history of journalism by summarizing the evolution of journalism, describing influential female journalists, and describing influential African American journalists.
