Mandarin Chinese 2 enables the students to further develop the communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing of Mandarin Chinese at a more advanced level. Students are immersed in Chinese culture as virtual exchange students in China. Virtual excursions from one Chinese city to another expand their vocabulary helping them learn to interact with others and use appropriate terms to communicate in various everyday situations.

Course Materials

Besides engaging students in challenging curriculum, VLACS guides students to reflect on their learning and to evaluate their progress through a variety of assessments. Assessments can be in the form of self-checks and practice problems, worksheets, assignments, discussion based assessments, collaborative assessments, pre-tests and practice tests, quizzes, discussions, hands-on activities, and module and semester exams. Instructors evaluate progress and provide interventions through the variety of assessments built into a course, as well as through contact with the student in other venues.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the near future, cause and effect, and desire (想 /xiǎng) by comprehending and communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as shopping and playing sports, games, and musical instruments.

Actions prior to specified time, actions in progress and contrast between elements of a sentence

Students will demonstrate an understanding of actions in progress (正在/Zhèngzài), actions prior to specified time (已经/Yǐjīng), and contrast between elements of a sentence (可是/但是, Kěshì/dànshì) by comprehending and communicating in written and spoken Chinese on topics such as body parts, illness, healthy habits and diets.
