Overview

In this course, students will learn the rules, game play, and guidelines for a variety of sports, including soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, football, and tennis. In addition, they will learn the officiating calls and hand signals for each sport, as well as the role a sport official plays in maintaining fair play.

Competencies

  • Principles Sports Officiating
    Students will demonstrate an understanding of principles of sports officiating that are consistent across sports by researching and discussing sportsmanship, qualifications, game management, safety and handling of difficult situation.
  • Volleyball Skills, Safety, and Rules
    Students will demonstrate an understanding of volleyball principles by examining and analyzing game skills, rules, scoring, and safety in a variety of gameplay scenarios.
  • Basketball & Soccer: Rules & Professional Development
    Students will demonstrate an understanding of basketball and soccer principles by examining and analyzing professional development opportunities to further gain knowledge of game skills, rules, scoring, and safety.
  • Baseball & Softball: Rules & Consistency
    Students will demonstrate an understanding of baseball and softball principles by analyzing rules and identifying proper mechanics and responsibilities of an umpire related to each sport during gameplay.
  • Football & Tennis: Rules, Communication & Preparing to Officiate
    Students will demonstrate an understanding of football and tennis principles by analyzing rules and identifying proper mechanics and responsibilities of an official related to each sport during gameplay.
