Ways to Learn
With hundreds of different subjects to choose from, you’ll chart a path to academic success, explore special interests, and develop your unique talents through self-paced coursework.
Courses use traditional learning methods such as reading, multimedia, and interactive activities that let you practice new skills. At VLACS, we offer a wide variety of course subjects within our rigorous curriculum.
Courses happen online with the ongoing support of a credentialed teacher, but unlike some online learning, you don’t have to show up for virtual “class” on set days or times. Instead, you work at your own pace and check in with your instructor at regular intervals.
Traditional doesn’t need to be boring. With VLACS courses, you’ll engage all your senses to learn, soaking up new knowledge and putting it into practice with worksheets, essays, and other assignments. For example…
Visit virtual art galleries, read about art traditions in different cultures, prepare for the College Board AP Art History Exam, and more.
View images of cells under a microscope, read about food preservation science, create a timeline of the history of genetics, and more.
Learn essential real-life skills such as how to file taxes, build your credit, create a budget, protect your finances, and more.
At the end of a unit, you and your instructor will meet virtually to discuss whether you have mastered the necessary competencies. This is traditionally called a Discussion-Based Assessment (DBA). The result of the DBA may be that you can move forward with the following competency in the course, or it may indicate that you need some extra time to master the material.
VLACS offers hundreds of options for courses. Browse our Learning Catalog to find a course you’re interested in.
With your instructor’s support, you will dive into the course material, gaining knowledge through reading, video, and other formats, and completing assignments to practice new skills.
Each section ends in a discussion-based assessment with your instructor, who will review your work and determine if you’ve met the competency requirements or if you need more time.
With hundreds of courses available through VLACS, there is something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to learn at an accelerated pace, or you want to learn about a subject not offered through your local school, we are here to make sure you feel excited about your educational experience.
