Reading Support: Grades 3-5

The Reading Support: Grades 3 – 5 course provides additional practice and support for students in grades 3 – 5 struggling with essential reading skills. Students will receive focused mini-lessons on specific reading skills during weekly meetings, and they will continue to practice these skills independently in between meetings. Students will also have access to a digital library of leveled books to practice their reading.

Note: The Reading Support: Grades 3 – 5 course is designed to help students develop the skills they need to become successful readers. By providing focused instruction and practice on essential reading skills, the course can help students catch up to their peers and reach their full reading potential.  It is not a replacement for grade-level English Language Arts courses. Completion time and credit will vary based on the competencies taken.

Major Topics and Concepts

The course covers the following topics:

  • Phonics: Students will learn about common phonics patterns and apply them when reading words in isolation and within texts.
  • Word Study: Students will learn strategies for decoding words using word parts including prefixes, suffixes, inflectional endings, and Latin/Greek root words.
  • Fluency: Students will learn strategies for improving their reading rate, accuracy, phrasing, and expression.
  • Comprehension: Students will learn strategies for understanding and analyzing the meaning of texts.

Competencies

Foundational Word Study (Grade 3)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Word Study by identifying and applying prefixes, suffixes, inflectional endings, and Homophones when reading and identifying the meaning of words.

Foundational Phonics (Grade 3)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of phonics patterns by identifying and applying the sounds of irregular short vowels, digraphs and trigraphs, variant vowels, r-controlled vowels, consonant -le patterns, silent letters, and syllabication rules.

Foundational Fluency (Grade 3)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of fluency by reading level Q - T books with accuracy, phrasing, and expression, at an appropriate rate. (*Reading Levels based on Raz-Plus Reading Levels)

Foundational Comprehension Strategies (Grade 3)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of comprehension strategies when reading level Q - T books by analyzing character, plot, and setting, identifying the author’s purpose, determining cause and effect, identifying main idea and supporting details, comparing and contrasting, making inferences, drawing conclusions and sequencing events. (*Reading Levels based on Raz-Plus Reading Levels)

Emerging Word Study (Grade 4)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Word Study by identifying and applying prefixes, suffixes, inflectional endings, Latin and Greek roots, homophones, homographs, and homonyms when reading and identifying the meaning of words.

Emerging Phonics (Grade 4)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of phonics patterns by identifying and applying the sounds of double consonants, digraphs, variant vowels, r-controlled vowels, silent consonants, and syllabication rules.

Emerging Fluency

Students will demonstrate an understanding of fluency by reading level U - W books with accuracy, phrasing, and expression, at an appropriate rate. (*Reading Levels based on Raz-Plus Reading Levels)

Emerging Comprehension Strategies (Grade 4)

Advanced Word Study (Grade 5)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Word Study by identifying and applying prefixes, suffixes, Latin and Greek roots, homophones, homographs, and homonyms, and commonly confused words when reading and identifying the meaning of words.

Advanced Phonics (Grade 5)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of phonics patterns by identifying and applying the sounds of vowel phonograms, diphthongs, silent consonants, consonant trigraphs, vowel trigraphs, and syllabication rules

Advanced Fluency (Grade 5)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of fluency by reading level X - Z books with accuracy, phrasing, and expression, at an appropriate rate. (*Reading Levels based on Raz-Plus Reading Levels)
