This engaging learning pathway allows students to explore various career fields while mastering key concepts and skills. For each competency, you can choose to complete a pre-designed project that simulates real-life career tasks or create your own unique learning experience. Regardless of your choice, you’ll engage in thorough research and apply what you learn to authentic career scenarios.

With the pre-designed projects, you’ll tackle real-world tasks that align with each competency. If you decide to design your own experience, you’ll collaborate with your instructor and a mentor to design and complete meaningful career tasks that demonstrate your understanding. Projects

National News Broadcaster

Competency: Broadcast Journalism

You are a producer for a national news broadcaster. You will be producing a prime time show. The program script will need supporting notes to verify that it is formatted for broadcast journalism.

You will create a news program script and your supporting notes that will explain types of broadcast journalism, describe the benefits of broadcast journalism and describe the components of a news broadcast.

Sports Reporter

Competency: Sports Journalism

You are a sports reporter who provides sport recaps of sporting events. You will need to provide a game recap of the local team. The game recap will need supporting notes to verify that it is formatted for sports reporting.

You will create a game recap and your supporting notes that will explain the elements of game coverage stories, describe the value of interviews with sports figures, and summarize the types of sports reporting formats.

Investigative Journalist

Competency: Investigative Journalism

You are an investigative journalist working for a podcast as a reporter. For your next assignment, you are writing a report on your recent investigation, as demonstrated by an investigative journalism.

You will create an investigative report and your supporting notes. Your notes on your investigation will explain the components of an investigation report, differentiate between the case identification details and the referral source information, and describe the importance of the investigation scope and purpose within the investigation report.

Documentary Journalist

Competency: Documentary Journalism

You are a documentary journalist and have been hired to create a short documentary as seen in documentary journalism.

You will create a documentary script and your supporting notes that will describe types of documentaries, explain the steps to producing a documentary and explain scriptwriting for a documentary.

Magazine Writer

Competency: Magazine Writing

You are a freelance magazine writer who contributes to various magazines. You are writing an article and are looking to get it published, as typically seen in magazine writing

You will create a magazine article and your supporting notes that will explain the structure of a magazine article, describe the process of making a pitch for a magazine article and describe the steps to writing a magazine article.

Copy Editor

Competency: Copy Editing

You are interviewing for a copy editing position with a media corporation. To prepare for your interview, you need to demonstrate competence with copy editing per the corporation’s editorial guidelines as part of the process of copy editing.

You will create an edited version of a document using their editorial guidelines and your supporting notes that will explain revision strategies in copy editing, describe the copy editing process, and describe the importance of copy editing. Here is the work you will be editing.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of journalistic story writing by summarizing types of news stories, explaining the structure of a news story, and describing elements of a news story.

Research in Journalism

Students will demonstrate an understanding of research in journalism by explaining the role of research in journalism, describing types of sources, and summarizing research strategies for credible sources.

Scene Sources in Journalism

Students will demonstrate an understanding of scene sources in journalism by differentiating observational and personal sources in journalism, summarizing journalistic rules for reporting on the scene, and describing steps in the interview process.

Writing for Publication

Students will demonstrate an understanding of writing for publication by explaining the writing process, comparing revision and editing, and describing the use of attribution.

The Publication Process

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the publication process by explaining steps in the publication process, describing components of a news broadcast, and describing components of a newspaper layout.

The Journalism Model

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the new journalism model by describing technology in journalism, explaining consumer habits in the new journalism model, and summarizing the future of the journalism model.

Data in Journalism

Students will demonstrate an understanding of data in journalism by summarizing the importance of data in journalism, explaining a data journalist’s use of data in storytelling, and describing the use of artificial intelligence in journalism.

Careers in Journalism

Students will demonstrate an understanding of careers in journalism by explaining education or experience requirements for journalism careers, summarizing the skills required for a journalism career, and describing career options in journalism.
