This engaging learning pathway allows students to explore various career fields while mastering key concepts and skills. For each competency, you can choose to complete a pre-designed project that simulates real-life career tasks or create your own unique learning experience. Regardless of your choice, you’ll engage in thorough research and apply what you learn to authentic career scenarios.

With the pre-designed projects, you’ll tackle real-world tasks that align with each competency. If you decide to design your own experience, you’ll collaborate with your instructor and a mentor to design and complete meaningful career tasks that demonstrate your understanding. Writing Center Manager

Competency: The Creative Writing Process

You are a writing center manager who guides writers of all skill levels to develop and refine their creative writing projects. Your role involves teaching effective writing techniques and processes to help writers produce their best work, as demonstrated in the creative writing process.

You will create a guide and supporting notes that will describe prewriting strategies, summarize the drafting process, and differentiate the revising and editing processes.

Writer

Competency: Creative Fiction

You are a writer who crafts imaginative and compelling stories for readers across various audiences and platforms. Your work involves mastering the art of storytelling to create engaging narratives, as demonstrated in creative fiction.

You will create a short story and supporting notes that will describe characteristics of fiction genres, explain plot structure, and describe character development.

Freelance Writer

Competency: Creative Nonfiction

You are a freelance writer who produces captivating and authentic creative nonfiction pieces for magazines, blogs, or personal publications. Your work involves using literary techniques to craft true stories that resonate with readers, as demonstrated in creative nonfiction.

You will create a creative nonfiction piece and supporting notes that will summarize descriptive techniques in creative nonfiction writing, describe the development of voice in creative nonfiction writing, and explain the impact of narrative point of view in creative nonfiction writing.

Poet

Competency: Poetry

You are a poet for a poetry society who creates evocative and meaningful works that inspire and connect with readers through the art of language. Your role involves crafting poetry that reflects an understanding of literary techniques, as demonstrated in poetry.

You will create a poem and supporting notes that will describe the use of imagery and symbolism in poetry, explain poetic form and structure, and describe the effects of language devices in poetry.

Television Producer

Competency: Drama

You are a television producer who is developing an engaging and emotionally charged drama series for a captivated audience. Your work involves overseeing the creative process to ensure compelling storytelling, as demonstrated in producing a drama.

You will create a drama script and supporting notes that will explain script formatting, describe dynamic dialogue in drama, and describe strategies to develop tension in a drama.

Competencies

Creative Nonfiction

Students will demonstrate an understanding of creative nonfiction by writing a piece of creative nonfiction that uses narrative elements and structures to address a specific audience.

Fiction

Students will demonstrate an understanding of fiction by writing a short story that uses plot, setting, descriptions, and dialogue to convey theme.

Poetry

Students will demonstrate an understanding of poetry by writing poems that use figurative language, structure/form, and word choice to convey theme, mood, and tone.

Read Like A Writer

Students will demonstrate an understanding of critical reading by analyzing texts from a variety of creative writing genres for mood and tone, structure, theme, and point of view.

Writing Process

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the writing process by creating a piece of writing through prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
