Overview

The elementary math courses inspire students to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. The learners use math as a tool to make sense of and understand the world around them. The courses include media that uses sight and sound to engage students. For example, rhymes, chants, songs, and videos help teach and practice foundational math skills. The focuses of the K–2 math courses are building a strong number sense, addition, and subtraction within 20, place value, measurement, and shapes. The focuses of the 3–5 math courses are multiplication and division within 100, fractions, decimals, shapes, area, and volume. Students explore content prior to being explicitly taught and hands-on activities help strengthen the learners’ algebraic and critical thinking skills. Digital and concrete manipulatives help support mathematical proficiency in all grades. The learners are provided with many practice opportunities that involve both on-screen and off-screen activities.

Course Requirements

To achieve success, students are expected to submit work in each course weekly. Students can learn at their own pace; however, “any pace” still means that students must make progress in the course every week. To measure learning, students complete self-checks, practice lessons, multiple choice questions, projects, discussion-based assessments, and discussions. Students and families are expected to maintain regular contact with teachers because, when teachers, students, and parents work together, students are successful.

    Students will demonstrate an understanding of addition strategies using whole numbers with sums up to 100 by applying the following strategies: decomposing numbers using place value, using the number chart, skip counting, open number line, and modeling.
  • Fluently Add Within 100
    Students will demonstrate fluency when solving addition problems using whole numbers with sums up to 100 by regrouping 10 ones into 1 ten and applying various techniques to add up to 4 two-digit numbers.

    Students will demonstrate an understanding of solving length problems using addition and subtraction by measuring various objects, collecting and plotting data, and using addition and subtraction to solving word problems using information represented on line plots.

    Students will demonstrate an understanding of U.S. coin and paper currency up to the value of one hundred dollars by identifying, describing, and counting U.S. coin and paper currency summing up to the one hundred dollars.
  • Time
    Students will demonstrate an understanding of time by reading and writing time to the five-minute mark using the appropriate AM or PM designations and describing time in terms of past the hour and before the hour.
  • Shapes and their Attributes
    Students will demonstrate an understanding of shapes and their attributes by drawing 2-D shapes using a ruler; describing the attributes of squares, rectangles, and cubes; and dividing shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths.
  • Arrays
    Students will demonstrate an understanding of arrays by identifying arrays, using various strategies to find the sum of an array, and creating arrays to solve word problems using addition equations.
