To enroll in this offering students must also be enrolled in the corresponding UNH offering. See UNH offerings for registration deadlines. https://ceps.unh.edu/outreach/tech-camp/programs/techleaders

The remote UNH Tech Camp Micro-Internship offering extends your learning into the real world as you perform tasks preparing you for STEM careers. You will research a particular career field, including the various pathways into a specific career, and use your work produced at camp as an authentic product or deliverable to demonstrate your understanding of tasks associated with this career. UNH Tech Camp is offered by the UNH College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and makes available the benefits of a research campus to the community.

Major Topics and Concepts

UNH TechLeaders is offering several projects including the following:

Regenerative Medicine: The Cryopreservation Project – Regenerative medicine has the potential to fully repair damaged tissues and organs. The cells and tissues used for this repair often need to be stored long term, frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196 °C, a process called cryopreservation. In this program, cryopreservation will be explained, demonstrated and current methods and their limitations will be discussed. Cryopreservation in nature will also be explored. In addition to regenerative medicine and cryopreservation, this program will also reinforce basic chemistry and biochemistry concepts, such as the properties of cells, water, freezing point depression, protein structure and function.

Regenerative Medicine: The Bioinformatics Project – In this program, participants will focus on bioinformatics – the use of computer science to answer biological questions. Bioinformatics is a relatively new and growing discipline that uses computers and databases to answer biological and biomedical questions. Participants will explore how to do biochemistry with a computer, as well as learn about proteins, DNA, RNA and entire genomes.

Regenerative Medicine: The Molecular Dynamics Project – Molecular dynamics involves the use of computers to put motion to molecules. This week-long program will teach students how molecules are put together and how they interact. Students will learn how to build and view molecules using a variety of hands-on methods, including virtual reality. Campers will expand their understanding of molecular geometry, bonding, structure, and dynamics, which are key factors in further developing “visuospatial” thinking.

Transportation Engineering: How do you get to school, work, or other places most days? We would bet it is by walking or driving on a paved or maintained road that was carefully planned out by a group of engineers. Have you ever thought about what it takes to maintain, repair, and update the transportation infrastructure around you? With replacement costs into the trillions, it is critical that we explore various material and structural innovations that can improve the longevity of our bridges and roadways. Campers in this project will be introduced to fundamental concepts of structural and bridge design, compositional designs of concrete and asphalt, as well as construction processes. Through a series of hands-on activities, fundamentals of structural and materials designs will be introduced and impacts of transportation engineering on daily lives and commerce will be reinforced.
