Fingerprints. Blood spatter. DNA analysis. The world of law enforcement is increasingly making use of the techniques and knowledge from the sciences to better understand the crimes that are committed and to catch those individuals responsible for the crimes. Forensic science applies scientific knowledge to the criminal justice system. This course focuses on some of the techniques and practices used by forensic scientists during a crime scene investigation (CSI). Starting with how clues and data are recorded and preserved, the student will follow evidence trails until the CSI goes to trial, examining how various elements of the crime scene are analyzed and processed.

Adult themes are explored in a direct and mature manner in this course.  This material may not be appropriate for middle school or early high school students.

  • Arson and Explosives Evidence
    Student will discuss the strategies and prove the difficulties associated with arson- and explosion-based crime scene investigations, evidence collection, and analysis as well as compare the various incendiary materials and devices.
  • Collecting and Analyzing Biological Evidence
    Student will demonstrate an understanding of how biological evidence is collected and preserved and will analyze various forms of biological evidence in order to determine: gender, age, relative health, and possible cause of death of an individual based on skeletal remains; the time and mechanism of death based on an autopsy; identity of a victim or sample based on DNA analysis, and discuss issues related to DNA evidence in a court of law.
  • Collecting and Analyzing Physical Evidence
    Student will differentiate between the various types and categories of physical evidence, illustrate the methodologies for evidence analysis, and apprise how their analysis can influence criminal investigations.
  • Firearms and Tool Marks
    Student will connect the collection and analysis of firearm and tool mark evidence to an investigators capacity to draw conclusions about the origin of evidence and its role in the commission of a crime.
  • Forensic Science and Crime Scene Analysis
    Student will demonstrate a capacity to assess a crime scene for critical evidence, apply the appropriate procedures for recognition, collection, cataloging, and preservation of evidence, and describe and illustrate the specialized disciplines in forensics and their application to the field of forensic science.
